I checked out three books in early January that I'd been looking forward to, and it took me forever to read them. I ended up liking them all, but it took me about six weeks to read them. Meanwhile, my February holds have come in, and one of them is an incredibly dense book that I don't want to read or stop reading.
Since I got those books in January, I've had to go out of town on family business, the inauguration happened and the firehouse of insane news since, I've gone out of town for work, I've had some mystery virus that wasn't any of the bad ones but still slowed me down, and a tremendous cold snap that nearly put me in hibernation. I logged into my library account and put off my March holds for a week, and I might add another.
The books I started in January were:
Moore, Liz- The God of the Woods
Khan, Shubnum- The Djinn Waits a Hundred Years, and
Ramirez, Tita- Tell It to Me Singing
I recommend all three of these books. I thought that The God of the Woods and The Djinn Waits a Hundred Years were both slow starts, but I wonder if I've just developed the attention deficit that so many of us have anymore. But I stuck with them both, and they both got good. Tell It to Me Singing didn't start slow- there's a bombshell in the first chapter. I didn't really like any of the characters very much, but the places and events were interesting, and they were Cuban American, and the food described sounded so good. I need to see if my library has a cookbook...
I also re-read The Magicians by Lev Grossman, for like the third time I think, maybe fourth, because I wanted a re-read when I was traveling.
My February holds were:
Akbar, Kaveh- Martyr!
Change, Abraham- 888 Love and the Divine Burden of Numbers (haven't started these yet), and
Chandrasekera, Vajra- The Saint of Bright Doors. (I have started this one.)
The Saint of Bright Doors is interesting, but the word that always comes up is dense. Not in the sense of being unintelligent at all, but every paragraph has an allusion to some off-the-page business going on with this weird place that the weird protagonist lives in. I usually like weird- I wonder if I'm just worn out from everything that's going on in the world? I think this is a case of the right book at the wrong time. I'm giving it a break and trying another.
I also got Mickey7 by Edward Ashton because it's being made into a movie, and because I've been interested in it for a while.
I can't believe that it will be March this Saturday. Living in crazy times makes the time go by quickly, at least.
If I don't get sick again, and if I can stop the insomnia that's been bothering me, I hope that I can get through a few books soon. It feels weird to not be sunk into a book. Wish me luck!
